Fun Winter Activities in San Francisco

Add these Activities in San Francisco to your itinerary during a winter stay at Hotel Union Square.

December 27, 2016

You probably don’t think of San Francisco as a winter wonderland. With average winter temperatures of just under 60 degrees, this is not the place to head when you want to build a snowman or find a great hill for sledding. Still, you will find plenty of winter Activities in San Francisco near Hotel Union Square. Ice skating, whale watching and other fun San Francisco Things to Do await. Plan your winter visit to our ideally-located Hotel, so you can be in the heart of all the action! Below are details of just a few of the popular winter Activities in San Francisco.

Whale Watching
Winter is a perfect time to spot gray whales. One of the best places for spotting these majestic creatures is Point Reyes. Dress warm and wear hiking shoes – to get the very best views you’ll need to walk along the cliffs. The clear views and, hopefully, a chance to see these beautiful creatures as they were meant to be will be well worth the effort.

Wine Tasting
No, this San Francisco Thing to Do is not strictly a winter activity, but it’s a great way to warm up on one of those chilly winter nights. There are many wonderful wine tasting rooms near Hotel Union Square. A few popular choices are Tank 18, The Winery, Wattle Creek Tasting Room, and Dogpatch Wineworks.

Visit the Sea Lions at Pier 39
A few sea lions hang out at Pier 39 year round, but in January masses of the creatures head to the Pier for a bit of rest. Head to Pier 39 to watch these interesting animals swim, sleep, and argue about who gets to rest where!

Alcatraz Winter Swim
When 3 men tried to escape from Alcatraz in 1962, experts said they couldn’t have survived the swim to the mainland. During this annual San Francisco Event, you can see if you’d have had what it took to make the swim. This event is only suggested for strong swimmers. Also, be prepared for cold waters of about 50 degrees. Because the event is limited to only 35 swimmers, those who would like to participate must register well in advance in order to get one of the coveted spots.

Ice Skating
Lace up your skates and enjoy this fun winter Activity in San Francisco. The whole family will enjoy this San Francisco Thing to Do together, and there are several rinks that pop up near Hotel Union Square. Most of the rinks, such as Union Square Ice Rink and the Holiday Rink at Embarcadero, are only around for a couple of months each year. Yerba Buena Ice Skating Center, however, is open year round, so you can enjoy zipping around the ice no matter the time of year.
