Things to do in San Francisco: 5 Top Coffee Shops in San Francisco

This article, ‘Things to do in San Francisco: 5 Top Coffee Shops in San Francisco,’ gives you a list of some of the best, most unique and ‘can’t be missed’ shops who specialize in art of the brewed bean!

Today, coffee is different than what it was 20 years ago. Enjoying coffee has become something just short of a religion and finding the next best ‘Coffee Shop’ is a welcomed journey filled with ‘hits and misses’ and we almost don’t want to find ‘the perfect cup’ – because for some, it is all about the journey and delicious Coffee.

This article, ‘5 Top Coffee Shops in New York’ is not a complete list of the great Coffee Shops in the city, but this is a good start, and if there ever is a topic that requires a follow up ‘Part 2’ article, it is this one.

1. Blue Bottle Coffee
Address: 66 Mint St., San Francisco, CA 94103
Telephone: 510-653-3394
Distance from Hotel Union Square: .7 Miles

This top coffee spot is a full-service bakery providing delicious coffees, teas & some tasty homemade baked goods and pastries.

In addition to coffees, teas and espresso drinks this Union Square Coffee Shop serves up a great Avocado Toast which should be tried.  Blue Bottle Coffee is situated in Mint Plaza.  The seating inside is limited but they also provide outdoor seating as well.

The hype of this San Francisco Coffee Shop will not disappoint.

Avocado Toast is a top pick at Mazarine Coffee.

2. Mazarine Coffee
Address: 720 Market St., San Francisco, CA 94102
Distance from Hotel Union Square: .4 Miles

Not actually ‘in’ Union Square but this Coffee Shop is worth the trip.  The great coffee at Mazarine Coffee is a guarantee…but the thing that brings many loyal customers back is the great food that complements the coffees and teas.

The Nitro Cold Brew, Drip and Pour Over Coffee drinks are the most popular.

This is a list dedicated to ‘Best Coffee Shops’ but the food here should not go unmentioned. The selections are baked and created on site and some of the top picks include; Marshmallows & Chocolate sweet toast, Strawberry Marmalade & Ricotta, Fig Jam & Ricotta, Bacon, Egg & Avocado and a Bacon Grilled Cheese (YUM!).

This place is popular (otherwise why would it be on this list) so be prepared for a line – but it moves fast, and it is worth the wait.

Coffee Tasting classes are offered and recommended for the hard-core Coffee-lover as well as the beginner at Sightglass Coffee.

3. Sightglass Coffee
Address: 270 Seventh St., San Francisco, CA 94103
Telephone: 415-861-1313
Distance from Hotel Union Square: 1 Mile

Sightglass is one of the most reviewed Coffee Shops on the list next to Blue Bottle Coffee.  Sightglass has several locations across the city but this location has a more open layout with a second level for seating and looking over the retail area below.

Loved the way it was decorated and how there was seating all over the place. They even had an upper level where you can sit and enjoy your coffee while admiring the coffeeshop.

Coffee Tasting classes are offered and recommended for the hard-core Coffee-lover as well as the beginner.  It is a good way to understand the many types of brewing and Coffee types and how and why Coffee will taste different based on the many different types of preparation.

4. Boba Guys
Address: 429 Stockton St., San Francisco, CA 94108
Telephone: 415-967-2622
Distance from Hotel Union Square: .4 Miles

This place wins our thumbs up for a clean, open design – no frills here, just great design and equally great coffee. Located in Union Square, Boba Guys is very close to Hotel Union Square. The interior features limited seating and a clean, minimal look and feel with light blonde wood finishes with white walls.

Boba Guys is about Coffee of course, but they also offer a great variety of Teas and iced drinks. Top loose Tea drinks include their Jasmine Green Tea, Coconut Green Tea and Indian Chai Tea.

They offer limited baked goods but what they do offer is good.

Because the menus rotate often, a good recommendation is to ask the Barista to make you something they recommend.  You won’t be let down.

5. Honey Honey Cafe & Crepery
Address: 599 Post St, San Francisco, CA 94102
Telephone: 415-351-2423
Distance from Hotel Union Square: .4 Miles

As the name suggests, this great San Francisco Coffee Shop also offers delicious Crepes!  Honey Honey brews incredible Coffee’s and Teas.  More so than any other Coffee Shop on this list it seems Honey Honey is in it for the food and pastries – and they do a great job of it all.

The smell of fresh brewed coffee is mixed with the aroma of freshly prepared Crepes, the famous New Orleans Crepe with Swiss Cheese, Chicken Breast, Mushroom and sundried Tomatoes is a fan favorite.

The Pesto Crepe, the North Beach Crepe and the Blintz Crepe are also very popular for a reason.  They taste great!
